Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek Amsterdam is a bi-annually event with catwalk shows and expositions about Dutch and Belgium Fashion Design. Fashionweek.nl is also an online magazine with news, interviews and background articles about the Dutch fashion industry, innovation, technology and sustainable movements within fashion, Dutch and Belgian Fashion Designers and upcoming talent from the low countries.
Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek Amsterdam started in 2004 as an initiative to put Amsterdam on the map as a sparkling and internationally oriented destination for fashion. It sets a stage for innovative initiatives, originating from the many start-ups and the seven highly appraised fashion academies in the Netherlands. It also aims to spread the word about the Dutch influence in the world stage of fashion and design.
The organisation has three values on which the bi-annual events are staged: Connect, Grow and Celebrate. Connect stands for the aim to clear the gap between commerce and creativity. Grow stands for the aim to point out the Netherlands fashion industry on international level and Celebrate stands for the fact that we have to celebrate the fashion talent in the Netherlands. In order to fulfil this values Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek Amsterdam is structured in different programs.
Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek Amsterdam is a combination of fashion shows of upcoming talents, designers and commercial labels and brands. Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek Amsterdam offers a broad and diverse programme meant for the fashion professional and their relations. Every edition Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek Amsterdam draws the attention of both national as well as international press and buyers. Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek Amsterdam is organized twice a year, the Summer/Spring edition in July and the Fall/Winter edition in January at the Westergasfabriek in Amsterdam.
Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek Amsterdam has made it her mission to contribute to the innovation environment in the Netherlands and the development of the Dutch fashion industry, with Fashion LAB. Fashion LAB - a laboratory for talent and innovation - is an on-going programme consisting of catwalk shows during Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek Amsterdam and a range of workshops, lectures and presentations that encourage innovation and support young entrepreneurs throughout the year. It aims to empower young people to set their first steps into a professional fashion career. By supporting young designers who participate in Fashion LAB, Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek Amsterdam helps them to realize their ultimate dream: becoming a renowned fashion designer.
Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek Amsterdam has received international recognition for its initiatives towards strengthening the Dutch fashion industry, stimulating interdisciplinary collaborations, seeking out new technologies and sustaining our planet’s biodiversity through the ongoing quest for sustainable and technological solutions in fashion.
Future Generation is a recurring exhibition to examine the future ahead. It is a future that brings hope and solutions in its technological sophistication. Each layer of the fashion industry has the potential for enormous progress: sourcing, time, people, talent, the ecosystem.
Lichting is the prize of the fashion industry that is awarded every year to the most promising fashion graduate of the Netherlands. The concept is easy: the greatest talents of the seven best Dutch fashion academies will be together in one catwalk show to present themselves to the tough fashion press and a panel of international industry experts. Apart from this catwalk extravaganza the students are involved in several workshops to help them with valuable insights into the business side of fashion. Lichting is an initiative by Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek Amsterdam, HTNK fashion recruitment & consultancy in collaboration with Mercedes-Benz.
Each season Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek Amsterdam receives dozens of applications from designers all over the world to participate. The difficult selection procedure is designated to the six fashion heavy weights in the Board of Advice. Each board member has been appointed on basis of his or her unique and substantial background in fashion: José Teunissen, Joanne Schouten, Frans Ankoné, Liesbeth in ‘t Hout, Peter Stinter, Rachid Naas and Peter Leferink.
